This session contributed to the global dialogue on the transition to a sustainable energy system. Panelists built on the findings contained in a report published by the International Energy Forum: Shaping a Living Roadmap for Energy Transition published in August 2023, with S&P Global as Chief Knowledge Partner. It found that "focusing on a singular pathway to achieving net zero emissions by 2050 could undermine achievement of other sustainable development objectives, constrain financing for critical energy projects and put at risk the necessary public support for climate policies." There is a growing consensus that a "multidimensional" approach is required, one that is inclusive of different situations in different parts of the world; reflects varied starting points and diversity of policy approaches; and is equitable.
Questions
- How do you define multidimensional energy transition?
- How do you expect the global energy mix to evolve over the next three decades?
- Some forecasts show precipitous decline in oil and gas consumption by 2050. Do you agree?
- What do you see as the future role for natural gas when there is much discussion about stopping unabated fossil fuels?
- What does the future of energy look like in Asia and Africa?
- How does/will the energy transition impact prices to consumers? How will it affect fiscal balances?
- What is the status of investment in energy systems and what is required?
- What's the outlook for new clean energy technologies and how can we accelerate research, development and deployment?
- What do you see as differentiated responsibilities of developing and developed countries for energy transition?
