16th Regional JODI Training Workshop for Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Europe

Odessa, Ukraine

The 16th Regional JODI Training Workshop targeting Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Europe was held in Odessa, Ukraine  from 12-16 March 2018. The event was held as a part of IEA for EU4Energy Training Week on Monthly Statistics hosted by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and the European Union under the EU4Energy Project initiative.

The Workshop was organised by the IEF with the support of the JODI Partners: APEC, Eurostat, GECF, IEA, OPEC, OLADE and UNSD. Trainers from Eurostat, GECF and UNSD were present to benefit the energy data professionals in charge of hydrocarbon data collection and dissemination at national administrations in Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Europe.

More than 50 delegates from 10 countries took part in the Workshop designed to raise awareness of JODI and improve the national capacity to achieve better JODI data submission from each represented country within the region. The Workshop was opened by Mr Ihor Verner, Chair of State Statics Services of Ukraine, and was also attended by representatives from the Ministry of Energy and Coal Industry of Ukraine.

Hands-on exercises provided a unique opportunity to explore methodologies for condensing data from complex energy supply chains into simple JODI questionnaire formats. Throughout these intensive training activities, attendees actively exchanged in dialogue on data with the JODI Partner organisations and amongst themselves, to share knowledge on the best practices related to data reporting mechanisms.

Workshop attendees also had the opportunity to participate in a parallel forum on transportation policies held under EU4Energy framework, with a special emphasis on the need for reliable data to make effective policy decisions. The theme of this forum highlighted the JODI mission for Better Data, Better Decisions.

JODI Regional Training Workshops fall directly in line with Objective 3 of the JODI 5-Year Action Plan to continue to strengthen capacity building efforts to improve JODI Data quality, timeliness and availability.

The JODI Partners will continue to follow-up on outstanding issues identified during the workshop and commitments made by participating countries to ensure greater data transparency within the region.
